Skeletal micro-density (Acropora muricata)

ID: 179

Class: Biomechanical

Description:

The fine-scale specific gravity of the material from which coral skeleton is constructed (Bucher et al. 1998, following terminology from Barnes & Devereux 1988). Micro-density should be closer to the density of solid aragonite (~2.96 g cm-3) than to typical bulk densities, because it does not capture corallite voids (i.e., porosity).
